Mac Internet Security X9 provides good antivirus protection against the latest threats, and has been generally rated highly by the independent testing labs in the past (although it slipped slightly in the most recent December 2020 Mac test by AV-Test).

If there are any free antiviruses to stay away from, they would probably be AVG and Avast because of that whole data collection scandal that happened last year.Intego is a veteran antivirus provider which has been defending Macs for over two decades now, so if there’s any software maker that knows what kind of security Apple machines need, it’s this company. If you are willing to spend some money I would still go with Sophos because of their best in class ransomware protection now that they acquired HitmanPro. If you don't have any of those and want a free antivirus, I would 100% recommend Sophos Home because of their whole cloud thing.

I personally use ESET because I got it when I bought all my computer parts but my licence is running out soon so I might switch to one of these.

Stay away from Malware Fighter and Driver booster because I've had issues with their reliability (Driver Booster downloading wrong drivers, etc.) There also is IOBit (you might know them from stealing Malwarebytes' code and claiming it as their own) their offering free lifetime licences for 2 of their products here (if I were you I would get uninstaller and ASC13). It is a bit outdated and I think that Spectrum switched to McAfee from F-Secure. Hey, I know i'm really late, but there was a thread about a year ago that mentioned that some ISP's offer free antivirus to customers. PLEASE CHECK THE WIKI FOR BASIC HELP + TROUBLESHOOTING INFO BEFORE POSTING.
